Planning is a profession and you need the right qualifications to practice as a planner. Employers expect planners to have tertiary education qualifications– at least an undergraduate university degree. There are several ways to study planning at the tertiary level. You can do an undergraduate degree in urban and regional planning (can also be known as urban and environmental planning, regional and town planning, or similar) or do a degree in a related field of study such as geography, economics, political science, engineering, environmental studies and then study a postgraduate degree in planning such as a Master of Planning. Universities welcome enquiries and applications from both young people who have successfully completed their secondary education and mature age candidates. Entrance scores for courses vary between tertiary institutions.
